Mr. Matsui founded the Matsui Nursery, Inc., in Salinas, CA in 1967. Over the past three decades, his nursery has grown a number of diverse floral crops. Anticipating a new trend in the marketplace, Mr. Matsui began, in 1998, to convert the nursery over to the production of potted orchids plants. Now the conversion is complete, and the Matsui Nursery has grown to become the largest potted orchid producer in the world with 2.8 million square feet of production area. It produces half of the orchids grown in California and 20% of the total U.S. production.
